How did Roman Polanski accept the oscar for best director of the Pianist in 2002?

Seeing that he can't come back to America because of the underage sexual harrassment charges.

Polanski was not present at the 2002 Academy Awards but the announcement of his win received a standing ovation from most of those present in the theater. The actual award was accepted on his behalf by presenter Harrison Ford.

And regarding his legal troubles, Polanski was initially charged with rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14, and furnishing a controlled substance (methaqualone) to a minor, but these charges were dismissed under the terms of his plea bargain. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor (statutory rape). He subsequently fled to France where due to his French citizenship he is safe from US extradition.
