As democracy evangelists, are we buried in our own arrogance?

This is a serious question of our role in the world. My question does not, I repeat, does not play to any individual or a single government.

I can only speak as an outsider, but I think that the US are not believed these days when they talk about democracy, especially since they don't have one of their own any more.

The US is on the way to totalitarianism. You just have to follow the discourse in the media and on this and other websites to see that. You've already built a concentration camp in Guantanamo, and condone torture. That's way down on the slippery slope in my and other people's books.

These days the US are seen as the evil empire, and it will take a long time of "good conduct" for the rest of us to change our views.
