They weren't built for walking. They use their legs for grabbing, and holding onto, things like flower stems, cattails, small tree branches... That's how they rest. They were built for flying since they eat flying insects like mosquitos.

Evolution has a "use it or lose it" principle. If you're not using an ability, then genetic errors can creep into the proper development of that ability, with no penalty of natural selection against them. If you need that ability and it fails to develop right, then natural selection will liklely act against you. Such useless organs usually become reduced in form and function, like the human appendix or any other vestigial organ.

If dragonflies only land to rest. etc. and not to walk (why would they when they can fly? and moving helps a predator spot you), then they would not have been using the ability that their six-legged ancestors had, and could be expected to lose it over a great span of time. The legs themselves are not physically reduced like the human appendix was, because they are still useful to the fly for the reasons stated above, like for perching, and ensnaring prey.

We can't say exaclty the reason why they cannot walk, because it's there Nature!.An adult dragonfly has four large, fragile wings. It has six legs. It can perch, but it can't walk. It uses its legs to make a basket to catch bugs in the air. it can fly 50 to 60 miles per hour. It buzzes by flapping its wings up to 1,600 times a minute. Thus,

the known fact is that Dragonflies have six legs but can't walk!!

  • They do walk.. in the nymphal stage they dont have wings and they use their legs to walk around underwater and hunt. Once they mature and turn into the flying adults they dont need to walk around because they can fly. I mean why walk if you can fly.. what purpose woud it serve?? none. SO when they are nymphs they use their legs to walk around, when they are adults they use their legs to perch, catch food, and to use in mating.. but as far as walking around they have no need to do so once they have wings.
