Do newer 1080p HDTVs automatically upconvert digital feeds to 1080p?

For example, if I have a 1080i upconvert DVD player, will my TV take the 1080i feed and de-interlace it to 1080p? How about if I play a DVD on standard 480p resolution – will my TV try to upconvert to 1080p? BTW, my TV is a Samsung HLT-5687S 1080p 56” DLP (with the LED light engine). My upconvert DVD player is the Samsung DVD-1080p7 Player.

I did notice that my DVD picture was better when I set my upconvert DVD player to 1080i instead of 1080p.

Thanks for your help.
