Geography
Cannes lies on the Côte d'Azur within easy reach of the Maritime Alps. It is noted for its gorgeous sandy beaches which are mainly open to the public for a fee, particularly as one moves west to Cannes La Bocca.
History
In the Middle Ages Cannes was a feudal depency of the Lérins monastery. Until the early 19th century, Cannes remained a small agricultural and fishing village with the highest density of population on Le Suquet hill. Beginning in the 1830s, foreign and French aristocrats built holiday homes in the area, gradually turning Cannes into a resort town.
The man responsible for Cannes' growth is Lord Henry Peter Brougham (1778-1868). A respected and talented British politician in his time, he discovered Cannes in 1834 on his way to Italy. Having bought land to the west of the Suquet hill, now the entrance to the city, Brougham used his many contacts in French politics to help develop the rest.
The development of the coastal village encouraged enterprise and a tramway, the Tramway de Cannes opened in 1899, Cannes Station opened in 1863.
Economy
The area around Cannes has developed into a high-tech cluster. The technopolis of Sophia-Antipolis lies up in the hills beyond Cannes.
The Cannes Film Festival, held annually in May, is a major event for the world film industry. There is an annual television festival, airing in the last week in September, also the Mipim is a major commercial real estate exhibition, taking place in March, other major festivals are Mapic, Lions, Mipcom, TFWA.
Cannes also hosts the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.
For what to eat / in Cannes: "Restaurants in Cannes
They say that a culinary journey through Cannes is a voyage in itself. With lots of International cuisine to be had, one simply is spoilt for choice. From Creole, Armenian, Greek, American, Mexican, Italian, and the special local rustic French fare that will give you plenty to choose from to whet your appetite. Whether you want to eat in the local brasseries, or at the delicatessen counter, or just pose outside a trendy cafe or tearoom, there is great traditional gastronomic delights available and lots of ice cream, pastries and cakes to grab if its only a snack you desire. The finest restaurants in Cannes have to be the La Villa des Lys, La Palme dOr, the Royal Gray and the Belle Otero.
These four restaurants lie at the highest level of excellence and all four are located inside the four hotels, the Majestic, Martinez, Hotel Gray dAlbion and the 7th floor of the Carlton. Do not ask me to pick the best restaurant as they are all outstanding and if the dish you desire is braised sea bass with crushed black olive and golden fennel risotto, or leg of port with sage and mild spices, you will be bowled over with the quality. Also a few kilometres outside Cannes, make sure you visit Verges famous restaurant, Le Moulin de Mougins which has top gourmet notch. Case Creole has great Mediterranean food, while Mexico Loco has nice spicy dishes in a cactus theme environment.
For the Italian style, try Vesuvio or the Piazza, which have great authentic Italian cooking. The restaurant Armenian is a favourite which is located in the middle of La Croisette, while Russian dishes are served up at St. Petersbourg. The Swiss cuisine is represented at the Canna Suisse, which has great prices that are easy on the wallet. Planet Hollywood is here just beside the famous Palais des Festivals, which is where the Film Festival takes place each year. Well recommended for great food and reasonable prices would be the Bec Fin, as well as the Auberge Provencale, which serves traditional French dishes.
For the Seafood restaurant, look no further than the famous Mal Assis, or the Poisson Grille. Also worth checking out is the Comptoir de la mer and the Coquille. The Pause Caviar serves the finer things in life, while the Comtesse du Barry offers luxury in a simple and pleasing way. The Haagen Dazs cafe will serve you up the best ice cream and also Swiss chocolate with pancakes to keep your energy levels up..."
