I second the Tamora Pierce books and I'd like to add Jim Butcher's Codex Alera. And Mercedes Lackey's Fairy Godmother Series and Elemental Series. Also The Discworld Series by Terry Pratchett....

Stephen King's "The Dark Tower Series" the first book is called Roland, The Gunslinger. It is an amazing series of seven books and if you are familiar with any of his other work, you will recognize scenes, aftermaths, and people from his other stories. It's a great series. I have read it three times and get something new out of it everytime.

I seriously suggest The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind.

If you want to read about women making it a guys world, such as a girl disgusing herself as a boy to become a knight or a girl who can talk to animals and gets a pet dragon. Or a girl who get captured and taken to another country so she put right the hiearchy there with the help of a shunned god and crows.

These are each quartets and all of them are by Tamora Pierce.
