where did jane doe come from?

Why do investigators that can’t put an id to a female call her jane doe until they find out her identity?

It's mainly used to name a corpse that has no identity, Jane for females and John for males. They now seem to use Precious Doe for children. I seem to remember reading this in the Wikipedia encyclopedia when someone had asked me this before and I looked it up.
