Too late to become an athlete?

Is it really too late for someone to become a professional athlete once they are over 20?

Keeping in mind they have no training and they would now start at the age of 20 to train to become an athlete, ie to be in 2012

Yes it would be about 10-15 years to late. Almost ALL of the athletes grow up competing or being around their sport from age 1. Look at Tiger Woods, age 3 and came onto the Tonight Show and drained a putt (kinda). There is a reason why athletes who come out from no where and are over the age of 20 get movies made about them.

Research all the events in both the Summer and Winter Olympic

Games. You will notice that some events feature mostly young athletes (Like gymnastics, swimming, ) , but many have a mixed

bag of ages. For example , age is probably not a factor in

Curling, archery, pistol events, equestrian, and perhaps in some of the endurance events like Cross country skiing, or marathon

running; Athletes in their 30's are common, in fact some are at

their best at this age. The US discus thrower Al Oerter won

gold medals in four consecutive Olympic games, and bearly missed making the Olympic Games for a fifth time. He ended

his throwing career at the age of 43.

It is not too late to become a competitive athlete. You can compete at any level of skill. But you need to be MUCH more than 'decent' runner or swimmer to have a prayer of making the olympics, and if you had the talent needed, you would know it by now.

I say it is not that to late. Well I need ot know the exact age for you to tell you what will happen.

I am 16 years old and I am going to the olympics ext year and my friend is going in 2012 and she is 25.

You have to be trained well for that kind of age.

You need to learn quickly because it is getting late.

What sport do you want to?

If you have no training and no one to train you,

I guess it is late because when you go to the olympics or a meet, you need a coach.

You can't just go to a meet wiht no team or coach.

That is against the rule for the olympics for some of the sports.

Anyways hope I ahve a lot of information.

    What sport/event?

Although most olympic athletes do not peak and are in their prime until their late 20s unless they are in smething like gymnastics, you have to at least be training up to your 20s. alot of events are very technical and takes many years at least 10yrs of practice to perfect on an olympian level. You may start training and be national level good by 2012 and unless you are supernaturally gifted athletic wise I think being olympian caliber by 2012 will be unattainable.

Trust me when I say that it is never too late to become an athlete. I am in training as we speak for the 2008 Olympics. i will be running the 800 and the 1500 meters. I'll put it this way. I'm far from a spring chicken. go for it. i encourage you from here to Africa. please don't listen to negative people. You'll never know what you can do unless you try. Give it all you got if you really want it cause Lord knows i am. Stay focused on what it is you r trying 2 do. Mentally take your self to the place u want 2 b and you'll get thee. good luck n all that u do and take God with u.

Most athletes are not proffesionals at the age of 20. Are you serious? A person does not go into their prime until their mid to late 20's.

most athletic careers only last till a certain age. some, like ice skating, are reserved mainly for people in their teens or 20's. because of this age limitation, it is very unlikely that a 20 year old person would be able to gain the necessary skills in time to begin a successful professional career within the prime age for most sports. however, anything can happen, and i for one wouldn't say its impossible :)

You could run at any age but you cannot take part in the Olympics at an old age like 45. you coud be an athlete at any age but not a famous one.

Depends on the Athletic Event, you'd have to be exceptional in what you chose to make the 2012 Olympics but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try!!
