It's still there and active exploration is being done for near-future drilling. We are consuming much more energy (oil), so we can't stretch it to 200 years, but our methods for finding and drilling oil has improved substantially so that we are finding more profitable oil, and previously unprofitable oil (hard to get to or in smaller reservoirs) is becoming profitable (available for consumption) as the price of oil (gasoline) increases.

But don't think Alaska is our claim to fame, because while there is a lot there being opened up for drilling, our shale oil reserves in the mid-west (Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, etc.) dwarf the oil reserves in all of the middle east and account for about 95% of the entire world's shale oil reserves .. and the gas prices are at the point where it is profitable to extract this oil (thus slowing the rise in oil prices with the introduction of huge reserves into the energy market). Also, great oil sands reservoirs in Canada are now profitably, and actively being explored and extracted.

We will always be dependent on foreigners in this global economy, so the only question is who can we trust with relationships of interdependence? Do NOT trade with your enemies or with those who are allied with them. Also, our natural resources have always been a great asset to us, thus wisdom leads us to tap into them responsibly (preserving the beauty of our own "backyard" and emergency resources).

Well first of all Jimmy Carter's a douchebag. As for the oil, there really is quite a lot of oil in the Alaska National Wildlife Reserve although nowhere near enough to last us 200 years. Alas, Democrats are worried about the carribou even though caribou herds in nearby Prudhoe Bay actually increased during drilling.

Jimmy Carter is, and will always be an idiot! He even said the other day that he is "irrelevant"! The funny thing about your question, is that liberals don't want to drill for oil, or build nuclear plants in the U.S, because of the "environment", yet they complain that Bush and Chaney are "in bed with oil companies". Hmmmm, sound familiar? Only liberals!

It has always gone to Japan, and in the last few years, Republic of Korea (south) has gotten a significant chunk of it. The oil from Alaska, that was sent down the famous pipeline, was always meant for the Japanese. It was a deal that was made in the late 60's between BP and Japanese investors.

Carter was actually in favor of expanding the oil exploration and production of oil from Alaska, just like he was committed to nuclear energy. Unfortunately, the wrong people were elected to congress (Dems and Reps) and a Repub pres, that were in the pocket of the oil companies. We are now seeing the results.

There is a lot of oil in the A.N.W.A.R. The environmentalists are afraid the spotted owl may have to fly 10 miles to find another tree to live in. Of the19 million acres there, about 2500 was asked for to drill oil. Make any sense to you. Not me. We should be drilling.

  • If you believe that oil is a scarce resource and becoming scarcer, wouldn't it make sense to preserve your own oil and burn up the oil on the other side of the planet first while they are still dumb enough (or frightened enough of your military power) to sell it to you?

We exported most of the oil to Japan in exchange for fuel efficient cars.
