i think an answer from a self harmer would be good here, so here we go. firstly, self harm is not always done on the wrists - it is often done anywhere along the arm, the legs and sometimes elsewhere - for example i sometimes cut my side near my ribs as its easier to hide. but it is often done on the wrists as the sense of danger often makes it seem more meaningful - it makes people feel alive.self harm is a way of releasing emotions that are too hard to deal with. physical pain is easier to deal with than mental pain, so we convert the mental pain into physical pain, which we can control - the feeling of having control over one's life is a big part of it. sometimes the sight of blood helps, as people feel 'dead' inside, they don't feel 'real'. they need proof that they are alive. it can also be out of self hatred, and to punish oneself. it can also be seen as a cry for help - a personal way of showing that you are in pain and need help.
in most cases it is not a suicide attempt - there are easier ways of dying - though self harmers are statistically more likely to commit suicide at some point, if help is not found. in some cases it is simply attention seeking, or an attempt to 'fit in', but this is almost always not the case - most self harmers try to hide the cuts/scars as much as possible, and are genuinely depressed.
i hope this makes people think more before they judge. people who self harm are humans too.
