Compressing file will reduce you space. but it depends on what kind of file you are compressing. If it simple data file (.txt) the compression will be anywhere 60%, where as .xls file compress only 15% or so, if you take video file they will hardly compress 3%.

If you have lot of simple data files like .txt go a head you can reap lot of space.

Compressing in just like removing all empty space and zipping it out. Donot compress file with windows compress command. They create trouble. Use standard winzip or some free zip softwares. Donot opt for encryption. They are troublesome. Because you may not be using same software for unzipping.

Not actually answering the question - but do you have a CD or a DVD writer? You could simply backup some data to disc and then remove it from your hard drive... this would be a bit easier long term than compressing.

go to my computer right click on the drive you want to compress select properties and under the general tab select the check box that says compress drive to save space, you will have to restart your computer and then it may take a couple of hours depending on the size of your hard drive. nothing happens to your data it just makes your hd act more like a flash card etc.

compressing files is a quick fix....what you should really do is get rid of junk on your hard drive that you don't need....things you do need....like videos and mp3 files take up a lot of space....try investing in a external hard drive...you can just dump what you want to keep on the extra hard drive....and you can still be able to get those files at anytime...shows up under "my computer" as another hard drive....

    1. Cleanup files which are not needed.

2.If hav some data, which u feel is not important, or you have it as a backe up, try deleting it.

    3. Try WinACE, or WinRAR to compress them into 1.

flow forward. Ther's no project in any respect. except you're deleting them in the time of a get carry of or an installation whilst it could screw up the action. however the information are write secure you have an exceedingly small danger of deleting them. Temp information could nicely be deleted devoid of having to be stricken in any respect. flow forward delete those 24514 bytes too :) comparable with the compress old information too.
