Kurt Vonnegut wrote "Slaughterhouse Five" after his experiences as an American POW during the fire-bombing of Dresden, Germany during WWII. Ernest Hemingway wrote "A Farewell to Arms" which takes place on the WWI front in Italy, but has more romanticism, regarding an American ambulance driver and an English nurse.

C.S. Lewis wrote THE LAST BATTLE, the final book in the Chronicles of Narnia series. That's the first that comes to mind, but if you were to do a search, you should be able to find out about the others.
