RPMs are high but the diesel engine has no power, why?

Its a diesel engine and sometimes when I start it and drive away the engine is quieter and will not have much power.

I'll pullover and turn the engine off for a few minutes and it'll be ok, the engine is louder and the power is ok.

Its a 1993 Ford series 9000 box truck.

Any back yard mechanics have an idea?

Road service came out to look at it and can't figure it out.

loss of power on a diesel, Hummm lessee.

Engine needs to get way more air, diminished fuel flow to the injectors, clogging fuel filters, injector timing needs to be reset.

Some times, the fact that the fuel being burnt, was not so good, and has left a lot of that chocking soot in the intake section of the engine.

Compression testing will tell you more about your gaskets...

Could also be a crack in the block -- get it cleaned...
