Anemic and pregnant, Vitamins are making me sick, any suggestions?

I am anemic and the doctor put me on iron supplements along with my prenatal vitamins. They make me really sick feeling. Even more than normal. I called the doctor and the doctor said that it was important that I continued to take the iron and would see me for an early appointment in two weeks. I do not think that I can tolerate this sick feeling. In the morning I am sick to about noon anyway. The iron makes me feel sick w/out actually rushing to the bathroom, any suggestions to dealing with this?

Ach! Nausea is almost as bad as migraines!

Take iron on an empty stomach (at least 1/2 hour before meals) for best absorption. If it upsets your stomach, you may take it with a small amount of food (except milk).

If you take other medications, wait at least 2 hours after taking iron before taking them. Antacids and tetracyclines especially interfere with iron absorption.

Notify your doctor if you experience nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea or constipation occur during treatment.

You might find some good information here. I was thinking also about alternative or healthy ways to work on the anemia.

Floradix. This is what I took and I loved it. It even sat well with the sensitive tummy with #2.

Conventional, Holistic, and Integrative Treatments for Anemia

As you know, India is primarily a vegetarian country. I found a system called Ayurvedic Medicine that is very natural and although unusual, is highly effective. For anemia in pregnancy they suggest a teaspoon of turmeric in a cup of plain yogurt. Eat this mixture on an empty stomach in the morning or afternoon.

Juice Therapy: Focus on vegetables that are high in iron. Blend it with juices high in Vitamin C.

Reflexology: When working on your hands or feet, focus on the spleen and liver reflex points. Get Poppa to do your feet if he will.

I really hope you find some ideas here. This last page seemed to have a lot of information.

Oh, since you are pregnant, I found this page on children's science. However there is this page of baby animals in utero that should just knock your socks off.

No suggestions but I am anemic also and you HAVE to take them. My levels were already low and after delivery I lost lots of blood so the levels were even worse. I spent the whole week after delivery in a half fainting haze.

Are you eating before you take the pills??

My prenatals make me sick too and I tried taking them before I went to bed and I woke up feeling sick too so I just got off the phone with my cousin and she told me about these prenatal vitamines made by multivites and they have added iron in them. I wouldnt suggest just taking iron supplements because iron is whats making you sick

Rainbow Lites are the best vitamins I have ever found. They are at the health food store, and are quite pricey..Hopefully, they should not make you sick..Had very good success with them, and the energy they give you is awesome..Makes you almost feel normal!
