Depends on your operating system. F1 for xp. F8 for some earlier versions, Control for some versions of win98. This stops your normal startup processes from loading , so you do not have all the functions you usually have.

As soon as the computer *begins* to boot, press the F8 key three or four times quickly. Wait a few seconds and you will get a screen that allows you to enter the system in several modes. Pick Safe Mode to enter the system with the basic settings and drivers applied.

Safe MODE? Press f8 . You may have to hit it repeatedly if your computer is fast.

I have Windows XP, may be a slight variation for other versions, but basically the same...

Start---> Programs ---> Accessories ---> System Tools ---> Disk Clean Up.
