    This means as a wedding gift you are to bring canned food or any household items one would need to set up housekeeping. It is an old custom.

    Where I'm from (NC) it's a group of people that get together and give a person gifts of any type they might need-even food. They usually do this in the churches for people that have suffered some bad luck.

    I have never heard of that put that way but usually it meant that you brought things that were a pound I would ask before going
