CHP top step is 70K (after 5 years).
San Francisco PD is $84,513
Marin County SO is about $80K
Modesto PD is about 64K
And, like all other agencies, add shift differential, education incentive, overtime, ect. you are looking at 90 to 100K easy... almost anywhere. A friend of mine made 105K on his first year on the job with Marin County... (w/ overtime)
Add paid medical benifits.
Add a retirement pension
(I'm sure almost every agency in CA is at 3% at 50)
Subtract Social Security (cops don't pay into it, because their retirement is already taken care of)
Add vacation time (CHP gets about 7 paid vacation weeks a year - if you think almost two months off per year is too much, you can work overtime on your vacation.)
Finally, consider that you can promote or specialize and make more money that way.
Finally, CHP works everywhere in the state. So, if you want to live in an area that's NOT 'relay' expensive (say, San Francisco) and work in, like, Death Valley, you can.
Oh, and don't worry about "boomers" heading for retirement. Any and all theories about population and pay is a farce. Government budgets are the only true dictator of staffing and pay.
