as a health professional, is it appropriate to inform a 9 year old that he has a terminal illness if he asks?

I would say that it depends on the maturity level the 9 yr. old has. Ask yourself if the 9 yr old would completely understand what it is you are trying to tell him/her. Technically anyone at any age should have a right to know what is going on with his/her own body. The real trick to it though, is how to inform them in a way that they will understand. Obviously, the 9 yr old knows something isn't right or he/she wouldn't have asked to begin with. Remember that honesty is always the best policy. Hope this helps.

no I believe that is something his parents should discuss with the child and once the parents have explained the illness and if the child has any questions then they can be directed to the professional in the presence of the parents
