The advantage to most modern security systems is that they are monitored and often more responsive. A security system can be tied in with smoke alarms or even moisture detectors to contact 9-1-1 in the event of a fire or flood, something the dog can't do. An alarm will notify the monitoring system of a break-in. An alarm can't be bought off with snack food. And in a tragic possibility, the alarm will be hard to silence, whereas a dog can be killed pretty quickly. Add to that the monitoring system, and the alarm is better protection. If you go on vacation, you have to leave the dog at home to protect the house while you're away. But what if you go to the beach and want Fido to go with you? Who's protecting the house? What if the dog is not well? So I would get the alarm anyway. We pay $16 for the monitoring, and the alarm/installation were free. Not to mention the discount on our homeowners insurance.
