The first five elected, in 1936, were: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Babe Ruth, Christy Mathewson, and Honus Wagner.

The Hall itself did not open until 1939, by which time several others were elected:

1937: Morgan Bulkeley, Ban Johnson, Nap Lajoie, Connie Mack, John McGraw, Tris Speaker, George Wright, Cy Young

1938: Pete Alexander, Alexander Cartwright, Henry Chadwick

1939: Cap Anson, Eddie Collins, Charlie Comiskey, Candy Cummings, Buck Ewing, Lou Gehrig, Willie Keeler, Old Hoss Radbourne, George Sisler, Al Spalding
