A long time ago, in a galaxy far away... No, that's a different story.

Let's see. Around 4,000 BCE, people in ancient Sumeria got around to naming the constellations that appeared in a band above their heads in the sky. They noticed that certain star patterns looked like certain things-- this set looked like a ram, that one a bull. Eventually they picked out eleven or so patterns that seemed to follow each other in a circle above their heads. Oh, there were other constellations, but they were out of the line that they could draw above their heads to make a perfect circle overhead.

This became known as the Zodiac. They noticed that people who were born when a particular sign was prominent behaved a particular way, and that particular events happened. They noticed that people born in May were quiet, and those born in June talked a lot. Thus we get Taurus and Gemini.

They found that things happened to the royal house in August (Leo rules royalty), and that events in October affected marriages (Libra rules marriage).

But with Libra I get ahead of myself. Originally there were eleven signs because Libra is slightly out of alignment with that circle. But time became better understood, and Libra was edged into the zodiac.

    Hope this helps.

    Astrological Signs/Zodiac Signs

A fundamental part of astrology is the belief that space and time (as seen from the earth) are ordered into twelve equal segments or divisions called the zodiac. Each of the twelve individual segments or divisions is known in astrology as a zodiac sign. According to astrological theory, celestial phenomena reflect or govern human activity on the principle of 'as above, so below'. Accordingly, astrologers believe that the Signs of the Zodiac represent twelve basic personality types or characteristic modes of expression.

In Western and Indian or Jyotish astrology, it is the sky that is divided into segments and the twelve signs are named after twelve different constellations that historically occupied each segment of the sky. This belt or band of constellations then became known as the zodiac. In Chinese astrology there is no connection with constellations, as it is simply the line of the equator that is divided into twelve equal segments. The twelve Chinese animal signs are therefore not a zodiac in the strict, original sense of the word, though the term has been adopted in Western use for the sake of convenience.

In Western, and Indian or Jyotish astrology, the emphasis is on space, and the movement of the sun, moon and planets in the sky through each of the zodiac signs. In Chinese astrology, by contrast, the emphasis is on time, with the zodiac operating on cycles of years, months or 'moons', and hours of the day. A common feature of all three traditions however, is the significance of the ascendant or rising sign, namely the zodiac sign that is rising (due to the rotation of the earth) on the eastern horizon at the moment of a person's birth. The method of calculating the rising sign varies between each tradition however.

Some Cancerians are different in your perspective. In most cases, like the Crab, Cancers seek home, they love home and love to impress others WITH their home. Those born under the Cancer symbol are yes, highly sensitive and they do not handle well with negativity and harsh criticism. They are very physical and ready to have their claws out, only if they feel harmed in anyway. Water signs are the most sensitive. Luckily, being a Water symbol means you are highly sexual and sensual of your mate. Cancers are ruled by The Moon, so you are bound to have more impressionability and a more dreamy nature than most of the other signs.
