Generally scientists believe that our solar system was formed from stellar gases that were attracted together by mutual gravitational forces. As they moved closer and closer they formed a center nucleus and gained density. The result was a large spinning pancake with a bulge in the center. The hot gases at the center became so dense it formed the sun and the outer gases condensed to form the planets. There is some conflict about why some planets rotate in different directions or what happened to the planet beyond Mars that now makes up the asteroid belt.
