The Advanced Research Projects Agency, America, funded by the U.S. Department of Defence created it in 1969 as a way to communicate remotely between computers of different networks in case of a Nuclear Attack. They eventually realised the benefits of this for every day life and as such the internet as we know it today was created and developed.

The internet was set up by scientests working in the CERN labroratory in Geneva Switzerland.
It is a common misconception that the U.S military invented the internet.
