If I , a woman in her mid 50's, had to choose just one type of popular music to be my favorite, it would have to be R&B & soul between 1955 - 1980. This encompasses a major part of the music I grew up with. Some of my favorite R&B & Soul groups and artists from that era are:

1950's : Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, Fats Domino, Jesse Belvin, Chuck Berry, Dells, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Jimmy Redd, Five Royales, Chuck Willis,Five Royales, Five Satins, Del Vikings, Cadilacs, Pastels, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Clovers, Ray Charles, Slim Harpo, Bobby Bland, Lloyd Price, Mickey & Sylvia, Ruth Brown, Etta James, LAvern Baker, Carl Perkins, Rufus Thomas, ,Little Richard, , Little Willie John, Little Anthony & The Imperials, Flamingos, Chords, Cleftones, Penguins, Platters, B.B. King, Wilbert Harrison,, Moonglows, Billy Ward & The Dominoes, , James Brown, Chantels, Coasters, Isley Brothers, Bill Doggett, Falcons, Big Joe Turner (Many of these artitsts went on to have hits in the 60's forward but I listed them under the 50's since that's when their first hits appeared)

1960's Marvin Gaye, ,Four Tops, Temptations, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Aretha Franklin, Martha & the Vandellas, Otis Redding,Sly& The Family Stone, Contours, Crystals. Sam and Dave, Percy Sledge, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, Chiffons, Stevie Wonder, Little Eva, Clarence Carter, Ben E. King, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Carla Thomas, Darlene Love, Ike and Tina Turner, Shirelles, Booker T. & The MGs, Gary "U.S." Bonds, Wilson Pickett, Chris Kenner, Impressions, Junior Walker & The All Stars, Jimi Hendrix, Edwin Starr, Gene Chandler, Jimmy Ruffin, David Ruffin,, Billy Stewart, Joe Tex, Dixie Cups, Archie Bell & The Dells, William Bell, Gladys Knight & The Pips, James & Bobby Purify, Eddie Floyd, Chuck Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Jerry Butler, Johnnie Taylor, Supremes, Jive Five, Solomon Burke, Freddy King, Albert King, Tymes, Marcels, Arthur Alexander, Tams.. Knight Brothers, Sheppards, Brenda Holloway, Brenton Wood, Delfonics, Soul Brothers 6 , Lee Dorsey, Barbara George, Barbara Mason, Barbara Lynn, Betty Everett, Arthur Conley, Bobby Moore & The Rhythm Aces, James Carr, Koko Taylor, Shep & The Limelites, Marvelettes, Barbara Lewis, King Curtis, Mary Wells, Joe Simon,Eddie Holland, Irma Thomas, Elgins, Dobie Gray, (As I said about the 50's , many of these artists went on to have hits in coming years after the 60's but first charted in the 60's )

1970's -Prince, Chic,Donna Summer, Trammps. Jackson Five, Al Green, War, Mel & Tim, Curtis Mayfield ( as a solo artist), Persuaders, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Kool & The Gang, Chi-Lites, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, O'Jays, Chairmen Of The Board, Three Degrees, Spinners, Ann Peebles, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, MichaelJackson(solo career), Stylistics, Parliament, Funkadelic, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Undisputed Truth, Manhattans, Gloria Gaynor, Jackie Moore, Denise Lasalle, Dorothy Moore, Bloodstone, Commodores, Staple Singers, Tavares, Ray Parker & Raydio, Teddy Pendergrass, Hot Chocolate,Labelle, George McCrae, Gwen McCrae

Looking it from a broader perspective, I think that the best music (not counting classical) was written and performed between roughly 1925 - 1985. Those years gave us thousands of great songs and wonderful memories. I've been collecting songs from those years and am fortunate to have an extensive collection (over 20000 songs) of blues, jazz, swing, country, folk, Broadway, R&B , doo wop, rock and roll, soul, heavy metal, new age, punk, alternative, grunge, early old school rap, etc.

You might say that the classic 70's song by the O'Jays that goes "I love music, any kind of music" definitely applies to me!

    54, male.

My favorite type of music is any music that moves along quickly, i.e. fast music!! It can be classical, or rock, or country, or someone blowing bag pipes!! As long as it moves along quickly.

Songs I DESPISE? When they get one sentence, and the whole song is just repeating that one sentence, over and over again.

Cannot think of any because I REFUSE to listen to those songs.
