It is free, make sure you use this link.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

In one word: Donations. Here's a snip taken from the website

"Spybot-S&D has long grown a full-time job for me and causes quite a lot of work for our volunteers. I'm working hard and it's great fun to do it. Of course all the infrastructure we use causes costs, and I've got to live on something, but at the same time I believe in free software. Therefore I decided to keep Spybot-S&D free and give you the freedom to decide if and how much it is worth to you.

If you can spare a few bucks, please donate to our cause. This is purely voluntary though - if you do not donate, you won't get less support from us."

Basically its all volunteers critiquing there programming skills and trying to help the general public. I'm not sure about spywarebalster, but I know that ad-aware features an upgraded version you have to pay for to receive extra services, but all programs listed do remove the infected adware files with there basic, free program. I've been using Spybot and the free version of Ad-Aware for years and find them much better than any pay-to-use program.

I have been using it for a long time, you must have downloaded something else. Also, send a donation, I did because the program saved my butt many times.
