Classic Mary Janes are usually patent leather flats with a strap across the top of the foot. Some will have lttle bow on the vamp. This is a classic shoe for little girls/baby girls.
However, now there are several variations in women's shoes. They can be flat, high-heeled or in between and come in a variety of materials but all have the strap across the top of the foot. A tap shoe is a variation of the Mary Jane.
Hope that helped.

They are reminicent of what little girls have worn to church for decades. Basically a black (although now they don't all have to be black) slip on shoe with a strap across the top of the foot. Very basic- but the strap is the key to it being identified as a Mary Jane. For visuals look at Catholic school girls, Madaline- from the book series and Emily the Strange.

A pretty plain shoe with a single strap over the top of the foot. Most mary janes are just plain leather but a lot of designers are modifying them by making mary janes into really high heels and there are a lot of mary jane style sneakers out now.

In the 1920's they made a shoe for a man called a "spat". it looked just like a mary jane only like a "high-top" mary jane. People could bring the actual maryjanes back into style for men
