I have lived in North Texas for most of my life. I love this area because we have mild winters (exceptions : ice occasionally). The Summers can be pretty hot here but, all facilities are designed to off set the heat. Even with the heat in Summer, there's a million things to explore in Texas. We have it all! Mountains, prairies, forests, desert and plains. Texas is large and allows for plenty of outdoor recreation. In fact, in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, they are building a year round ski lodge and resort! This should be finished by 2010. We have the Arlington area which has the new stadium, Six Flags, Water Parks and so on and on. Arlington sits between Dallas and Ft. Worth. Ft. Worth, has a wonderful Arts district and zoo! They also have "The Stockyards" where ranchers buy and trade big dollar cattle! Very interesting!! They sponsor a real cattle drive which follows the original Chisolm Trail! People love this drive and call it one of their favorite things to do! In Dallas, you've got it all! Fine dining, great Arts district and more shopping than anyone can do! This entire area is easy to get around and moreso now that they have added several new roads. Oh yeah, we also hold the Nascar races here as well. Down the road, you will find several wineries where you can taste the wines made from Texas grown grapes.
As for the hurricanes...we are too far Northwest for them to affect us too much. Usually, in the form of rain! We are more concerned with tornadoes in this area. Even so, this area does not match tornadoes in Oklahoma and Kansas! So, we are well equipped for such storms with doppler, sirens and a plan for such events before they happen! If you are adventurous, you can ride along with the storm chasers for one "hairy" ride and experience!!!
Texans are usually considered to be very friendly people. That is true! I can honestly say that every time I have had car troubles, someone has always stopped and helped me! ALWAYS!! When my daughter needed a transplant, people stepped up and donated monies to get her monetarily readied! They held old car shows, wrestling matches and a number of things to help her raise the money for the ability to get her in the door for a transplant. I have traveled to many parts of this country and have never met people as friendly as they are here. I am not prejudice as I have heard this from out-of-staters as well.
The housing prices here are better than in most states. You can get a beautiful home here and place it in another state and you may not be able to afford that home placed elsewhere! The house I own, if I took that house and placed it in California...it would go for millions!!! I paid a little over 200,000.00!! This trend seems to be statewide!
Facts about Texas : We have our own power grid from the rest of the US. This means that when the power goes down in major blackouts, ours will not! We are still oil and gas producers! Much of our fruit comes from the Texas Valley as does alot of our vegetables! We are the only state that made provisions in our Constitution, to become it's own country. We are known for our wonderful barbeque. Part of Texas is cattle country and thus, we have fresh corn fed beef for those barbeques!
This State is loaded with history! A few years ago, they actually dredged out an intact canon from the Alamo war! We have found numerous arrowheads from all over Texas! Texas is an awesome place to fossil hunt too! Because we were once a shallow ocean, fossils can be found easily. There are actual dinosaur footprints which fossilized and can be viewed , in place, on the bed of the Paluxy River. There are Indian relics from migrant Indian campgrounds. Our many Forts and State Parks are wonderful to visit too and many are connected with the States history in someway!
Okay, I think I have told you most all I know. Good luck to you and i hope you move where you will be the happiest!
