Does anyone get the end of Sin City where Becky (Alexis Bledel) gets on the elevator with Josh Hartnett?

I've read alot of different theories on this one. One is that he is an actual hitman (the end credits list him only as a character called The Man) and has either been hired perhaps by the girls from Old Town or another theory is that he is hired by the girls themselves, The possibility that this is the case is explained by the fact that at the start she stiffens up when she hears his footsteps (A possible sign that that she was expecting it) and he offers her a smoke instead and after shooting her he holds the girl until she dies and than says he'll cash her check in the morning. Compared to what they are running from, it does seem like a much easier way to go.
I think that the most logical explanation is this, Robert Rodriguez shot the start scene with Josh Hartnett to show to Frank Miller as a test to see if he would let them actually do the movie. He is known for his love of saving money so, if he thought it was good enough to get the film made than why throw it away? He may have shot the end scene to tie the start scene on or as a continuation scene, as Sin City 2 is suppossed to be out in 2008 and Sin City 3 is rumored to be heavily based on a story line involving the Becky character.
I've researched the story line of the graphic novels on the internet and apparantly, Becky actually was killed in the alley along with the mobsters. So perhaps, Robert rodriguez and Frank Miller are the only ones who have the actual answer as to the end scene.

She's a little squealer and is about to get her comeuppence. She doesn't know the guy who got on the elevator with her is a hitman, and she is probably the target.
Remember in the very beginning of the movie the guy that shoots the girl on a rooftop or balcony scence? He was a hit man, the same hitman who gets on the elevator with the little bigmouth Becky. Get the point?
