    Oxford is the oldest university in the English speaking world, but it's public. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the University of Al Karaouine in Morrocco is the oldest continously operating institution of higher learning in the world, and it's also private.

    There were several universities founded in Italy and Spain around the year 1000 A.D., however, the first significant university was Oxford in the 11th century.
