Well fennel seeds and caraway seeds do look a bit alike, but taste quite different.

Fennel seeds taste a bit like licorice, where caraway tastes more like ... well like hard to explain, but not like licorice.. you may have tasted it before on rye bread.

    Here's more info:

You can often buy them in the grocery store (whole or ground), but otherwise ethnic stores are good (especially Indian, Middle Eastern, and perhapsMexican, etc.)... they'll be a lot cheaper there too.

When you go to the store and buy "rye bread" the seeds in that bread is caraway you can sniff it and tell what it smells like.

Fennel has a more licorice scent and also Anise seed has a similar taste and scent.

You can buy these spices and seeds in a regular grocery store or order them from specialty stores.

I have ordered some great quality spices from a company called "Penzeys". They will send you a catalog and it tells everything you want to know about seasonings and gives you recipes. Here is the toll free number: 1-800-741-7787.

    best of luck

Fennel seeds are slightly larger & greener. Caraway seeds are browner & normally smaller than fennel seeds. Rubbing the seeds between your fingers to release the oils will help to smell them.

Caraway is similar in action to anise and fennel. Being antispasmodic and possessing carminative properties, the seeds of caraway soothe the digestive tract, acting directly on the intestinal muscles to relieve colic and cramps as well as all types of bloating and flatulence.
