yes, norton is slow, that's just how it is. you can disable real-time protection but then there's no point in using antivirus.. kaspersky and nod32 are fastest antiviruses on the market now. we use NOD at work and i got no complains so far. you computer might be slow also because of using norton and some other security program with real time protection like antispyware or firewall.

The simple answer is yes it will.

The two worst for this are Norton and McAfee. They're both system hogs, and they hook into everything.

Pick a different AV software, I personally like Avast Pro, and a decent firewall, again my pref is Sygate Pro, but the home and personal firewall editions of both are good, and free to home users.

Ad Aware SE and Ewido will take care of your anti-spyware needs without creating a problem also.

But, as someone mentioned, might want to give a thought to increasing your physical memory too.

The amount of system performance with McAfee will depend on the type of computer you have. Some older computers can't run the latest version of McAfee even with or without upgrading. Double check your system specs and upgrade capabilities or find a alliterative program are your only options but other then that it sounds like your already infected with some spyware or malware. You may also consider reinstalling your operating system before you solve your system performance/computer security issues.

Get rid of Norton. It uses way to much memory and the overall opinion of most valid technicians out there is that it just sucks. Try downloading Avast! from www.avast.com. It is free for home users and works a lot better. Its memory foot print is a fourth of what Norton uses as well, so your system will not run so slow. It wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade your memory as well!

As far as what was slowing down your PC with Norton -- I can't say for sure, but one thing that will hurt the performance of your PC with Norton is the scan options for the Auto Protect, specifically having it set to scan files when accessed. This means that any file accessed will be scanned. This is a performance killer. You should try and set your auto protect options to scan files when they are newly created or modified. This protection level is just as good and will not kill your performance. Also make sure that you schedule daily scans of HDD and keep your Virus Defs up to date.

Norton increases the time it takes to open a file by 591%, McAfee by 198%, Trend Micro by 133%

The reason norton makes your computer run slow is that it is a resource hog, that hte price to pay for having norton, I would switch to something else like AVG or McAee, they don't use as much memory to run their programs.
