What planet was rising in the western sky tonight?

At about 10 pm PDT, I observed a very bright object approxmimately 40 degrees above the horizon in the western or north-western sky. I took it to be a planet, although I don't know which one. I live in Northern Canada, at 61 degrees N, 135 degrees W.

Things don't rise in the west, not even in Canada (calm down, I like Canada). That was Venus, setting in the west.

Venus is on the western horizon after sunset this time of year. It's either on the western horizon after sunset or the eastern horizon before sunrise. It's the nature of Venus because it's closer to the sun than the earth. Isn't Venus spectacular?
