Disc insulators(pin cap) are always used in tension. They are flexible and can be added to easily. They are always used to support overhead lines to towers. Post insulators are used where compression loads are required. i.e in substations. They have an advantage that you can put a conductor through the centre of the insulator to take into a transformer, switch or circuit breaker etc. Disc insulators have to be by passed with a "jumper connection"
