Identifying Consonants?

How would you assess a child's ability to identify consonants? Without simply pointing to a letter and saying "What is this letter?" Do you have any ideas to assess this skill in order to plan an instructional activity to teach it?

Put magnetic letters on a table.

Or write them in a random order on a piece of paper.

Make a duplicate for yourself to check or circle the ones he does know.

Ask the child to tell you some that he knows. Then say do you know this one, or this one...

One of the best ways to teach letters is to have them put the letters in alphabetical order in a puzzle made for that.
