What is connecting?

I live in SE Asia and hear about the young in the USA speak of connecting. I am not sure what this means. Is it something like having a date?

Update:

and anothert one. Hooking up

Here that means to have sex.

The word "connect" was made famous by that very English writer, E.M Forster in "Howards End". of which "only connect" was the key phrase, as it was about people reaching over to make contact over numerous social and cultural divides.

"Only connect! That was the whole of her sermon.

Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted,

And human love will be seen at its height.

    Live in fragments no longer.

    Only connect... "

It means making contact with other people around you and trying to establish dialogue. It may have other meanings (the USA is a vast country), but that is the main one.

It could have a number of meanings.

Connecting could be a description of when you meet somebody that you have a lot in common with and you sort of 'connect' with them.

It could just be a term for getting together - either as friends, or in your example of a date.

Or it might have some 'hidden meaning' for kids the same way 'hooking up' can mean getting together with people, or it could refer to getting drugs.
