Where does the stereotype "Black People Eat Watermelon" come from?

I know the stereotype about fried chicken comes from the west Africans. They bought "frying" food to the United States and many blacks used to take fried chicken to work because it would last a long time. Does anyone have any Idea where the stereotype that Black People eat watermelon comes from???

When the blacks were slaves and working the plantations the whites allowed the black slaves to eat watermelon because it was cheap.

It comes from the South, where a lot of people (Black and White) like watermelon, at least more than Northern Whites like watermelon. Southern Whites generally eat stereotypically Black foods more than Northern Whites do.
