    You want to set up two equations. Let x be the number of cows, and let y be the number of turkeys. Since there are a total of 28, you know that:

    x + y = 28

    You also know that cows have four legs, and turkeys have two legs. The number of legs that all the cows have is 4x. The number of legs that all the turkeys have is 2y. So you know that:

    4x + 2y = 96

    Now solve by substitution or elimination. I personally like elimination, so I multiply the first equation by 2 and subtract it from the other:

    x + y = 28

    2x + 2y = 56

    (4x + 2y) - (2x + 2y) = 96 - 56

    2x = 40

    x = 20

    So there are twenty cows. Since there are twenty-eight total, there must be eight turkeys.

    let c=number of cows

    let t=number of turkeys

    the total number of both is 28, so

    c+t = 28

    this can be rearranged:

    t= 28 - c

    i think we can safely assume that each cow has 4 legs and each turkey has two, so:

    4c+ 2t = 96 now let's substitute 28-c for t (from above):

    4c +2(28-c)=96

    4c +56 -2c = 96

    2c = 40

    c = 20

    so t=28-20 = 8

    checking:

    4(20) + 2(8) = 80 + 16 = 96 checks

    Let x = the number of cows

    4x + 2(28-x) =96

    4x + 56 -2x = 96

    x = 20 (cows)

    (28 - x) = 8 (turkeys)

    divide 4legs for the cow into 96legs total and you get 24 even,

    the difference between 24 and 28 is 4, and turkeys have 2 legs each, so divide 2 into 4 and you get 2.

    So the answer is 24 cows and 2 turkeys

    x = number of turkeys

    y = number of cows

    x + y = 28

    2x + 4y = 96

    solve for x and y

    x = 28 - y

    2(28 - y) + 4y = 96

    56 + 2y = 96

    2y = 40

    y = 20

    x = 8

    Test it out.

    8 turkeys means 16 legs

    20 cows means 80 legs

    total is 96

  • x = amount of cows

    y = amount of turkeys

    x + y =28 ---> 2x + 2y = 56

    4x + 2y =96

    2x = 40

    x= 20

    y = 8

    There were 20 cows and 8 turkeys

    C+T=28

    4C+2T=96 (4C refers to 4 leg cows)

    C=28-T

    4(28-T)+2T=96

    112-4T+2T=96

    T=8

    C+T=28

    C-8=28

    C=20

    8 turkeys, 20 cows
