They're a co-dominant genetic characteristic. That means if you have the allele for A blood and the the allele for B blood, you'll have AB type blood. This is different from regular Mendelian genetics because both alleles are being expressed at the same time, versus one being completely dominant over the other so only one phenotype is expressed.
