Police sites selling stolen goods?

I was just on ebay and came across something where the police sell the stolen good recovered at a low price as they don't want to make a profit. Is this correct and if so where can i find the LEGAL site? i have had a look but can't find anything.

Thanks.

Update:

where can i find out about these auctions i am in Eastbourne in the UK?

OK here's the line on that one.

    a. the police recover stolen good daily.

    b. they are stored for a given length of time to ID the owner if possible .

    C. the Item if unclaimed or no owner traced, is put up for auction, This helps offset police costs for storing etc. It helps keep your taxes in line.

D E-Bay is just another way to auction them off to a larger audience.

I know the city in which I work has police auctions all the time for getting rid of stuff (usually confiscated vehicles).
