East Timor is half of the island of Timor, which is about 400 miles north of Australia.
East Timor was a Portuguese colony that moved for independence in the 1970s. However, West Tmor is part of Indonesia, which thought it would be an embarrassment to have a small independent nation in their midst, so the invaded the nascent nation in 1975.
What followed then were decades of incredibly cruel and repressive government, including massacres of civilians. The independence movement was lead by Nobel Peace Prize winners Jose Ramos Horta and Bishop Belo, and freedom fighters Xanana Gusmao and Constancio Pinto.
A referendum - amidst much bloodshed - finally awarded East Timor independence in 1999. (Following the 1998 resignation of the Indonesian leader Suharto.)
