"The elephant in the room (also elephant in the living room, elephant in the corner, elephant on the dinner table, elephant in the kitchen, etc.) is an English idiom for an obvious truth that is being ignored, for various reasons. It is based on the fact that an elephant in a small room would be impossible to ignore."
My brother got kicked out of high school in the end of November and my extended family of course all found out about it but didn't say anything as not to be rude. When we went to my grandmother's Christmas party in December, the whole family was there and I guess one could say there was an elephant in the room because everyone knew but pretended like nothing happened which needless to say was rather awkward.
