    According to data from the 2000 US census, here are the cities with populations over 100,000 with the highest number of Ph.D.s per capita. (Keep in mind that only 1.1% of Americans hold a Ph.D.)

    1) Cambridge, MA - 9.6% (of population age 25 and above)

    2) Ann Arbor, MI - 9.3%

    3) Berkeley, CA - 8.1%

    4) Athens / Clarke County, GA - 5.8%

    5) Madison, WI - 4.2%

    6) Durham, NC - 4.1%

    7) Irvine, CA - 4.0%

    8) Tallahassee, FL - 3.8%

    9) Fort Collins, CO - 3.7%

    10) New Haven, CT - 3.4%

    If you notice with those stats is that most if not all of those towns are places where Universities are, if you find a town with a University, especially a big one, then you will find a bunch of Ph.D.s
