Google Maps has an extensive API that lets you pretty much do anything you could want to do to a map. Also, if you want to have fun while learning AJAX, Google Maps is a great way to go about it.

You can find the API and lots of help here:

It surely makes it much user friendly. If I had a choice between to identical websites, one with interactive maps and the other one with static maps, I would definitely go for interactive maps.
