Great temperments, wonderful companions, independent natures, Extra Large, Fluffy, Beautiful, Very smart, Various coat patterns, Active, extremely strong and willing to do anything. Great companions and family animals. Good for cold weather loving people and snowy conditions.

Very Large, Very Hairy, Need grooming, NEED LOTS OF EXERCISES, Need lots of stimulation, Exercises, They can howl and bark alot, VERY STRONG, have a strong small prey drive and dont do well with cats unless raised with cats and small animals, EXERCISE, Get very hot and fustrated in HOT outdoor situations, Can get a "pack" mentality if more than one is housed together, Like to run away even if they are very well trained, Must train them well and keep there minds totally busy. EXERCISES.

with that said I love Mallies. For un-knowledgable people out there (I am not saying you the poster of the question) Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Huskies, and Eskimo Dogs are all diffrent breeds and have diffrent tendencies, but they all have one thing in common, they are WORKING sled dogs. They are very highly intellegent and active animals. They are not house pets and dont make real excellent strictly house dogs, I didnt say everyone of them but that the breed in general is not a good canadate for just being a couch potato and looking pretty tied to a tree in the back yard.

I had a Malamute mix named Tuhmanee and she was one of a rare "best dog in the world" dog. Though without experiance the wrong kind of person can ruin a Malamute if they dont take the time to really research the dogs behavior tendencies and needs.

The malamutes I've known were beautiful dogs, had great temperaments with people, including kids, most were dog friendly if well socialized. The down sides are the coat (unless you enjoy grooming and I do). They need a lot of grooming and shed a lot. They're also a breed that needs a lot of exercise and an owner who has some dog experience because they can be a bit hard-headed, though manageable.

    Alaskan Malamute

Their breed standard calls for a weight of 75 to 85 pounds (34-38.5 kg) and a height of 23 to 25 inches (58-63.5 cm) but much heavier individuals (120 to 140 pounds) are commonly seen. The coat is a dense double northern dog coat, somewhat harsher than that of the Siberian Husky. The usual colours are various shades of grey and white, sable and white, black and white, red and white, or pure white. The physical build of the Malamute is compact and heavy bone is called for.

Although still in use as sleddogs for recreational mushing, most Malamutes today are kept as family pets or show dogs. They are unable to compete successfully even in long-distance dogsled racing and their usefulness as sleddogs is limited to freighting.

The Malamute temperament is friendly and affectionate by reputation, but they are known among dog drivers for their readiness to scrap with other dogs.

Health issues in the Malamute are hip dysplasia, inherited polyneuropathy, and the usual northern-breed eye problems (particularly cataract and progressive retinal atrophy).

Their dense coats mean that Malamutes do not go well with hot weather. When the weather gets hot, they are even more than other dogs and need plenty of water and shade.

The Malamute is a descendant of dogs of the Mahlemiut tribe of upper western Alaska; native dogs were probably crossed with larger "white man's breeds" during the Gold Rush to increase their size for use as heavy freighting dogs. Recent DNA analysis confirms that this is one of the oldest breeds of dog. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The only thing that sets the Malamute apart from most other breeds are their size, coat and temperment - other than that they are very similar to every other dog.

I think the pros are covered.

The cons are fur, fur, fur, fur oh and FUR! If you don't mind brushing your dog everyday and vacuuming on a regular basis you should be fine.

Cons - they shed continously. In you live in a warm weather climate like Florida or Southern California, they will suffer tremendously in the heat and humidity.

Pros - They are excellent guard dogs and enjoy the people in their "pack". They tolerate other dogs well.
