Both languages are similar though there are some differences. First Urdu is the language spoken by the Muslims of the former "India" and Hindi is spoken by the Hindu people. Overall people that speak Hindi can also understand and speak Urdu and the same thing happens with people who speak Urdu. Another difference is the way the two languages are written. Urdu is written more like Arabic and Farsi. Hindi is written a completely different way. Both languages originated from the original Indo-European language. It is your choice what you want to learn first depending on what you are more interested in.
