Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein

There is a place where the sidewalk ends

And before the street begins,

And there the grass grows soft and white,

And there the sun burns crimson bright,

And there the moon-bird rests from his flight

To cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black

And the dark street winds and bends.

Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow

We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,

And watch where the chalk-white arrows go

To the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,

And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,

For the children, they mark, and the children, they know

The place where the sidewalk ends.

my guess is that it is just a fun poem about a sidewalk--Shel may have had no deeper meaning than that.

but it could also be a poem about childhood.

a Limericks is a poem that is a couplet and a triplet like you have there.

A Haiku has three lines - 17 syllables:

    5 syllables

    7 syllables

    5 syllables

A Cinquain has 5 lines-based on the number of syllables or words:

    1) the title

    2) a description of the title in 4 syllables or words

    3) a description of the action in 6 syllables or words

    4) a description of the feeling on 8 syllables or words

    5) another word for the title in 2 syllables or words

A Diamante poem is diamond-shaped to show growth or movement from one extreme to another:

    participle

    Other Forms of poetry:

    Free verse

    Prose

In Acrostic poems, the first letters of each line are aligned vertically to form a word. The word often is the subject of the poem.

Rhymes - There are several rhyming poetry forms. Couplets are poems with two rhyming lines. Triplets have three rhyming lines. Combinations use a variety. For example, every line may rhyme with a couplet at the end. Limericks are fun poems that combine a couplet with a triplet. Lines 1, 2 & 5 rhyme with each other. Lines three and four rhyme.

Autobiographical - Write a poem about yourself. Or, create a biographical poem about your favorite character or real life personality.

HE SAID THEME OF THE POEM, (STYLE, TYPE) NOT WHAT IT IS ABOUT PEOPLE!

leave the city and go into the country.

in a deeper context, their ideas that city life is cold and hard, focused on working hard, in a huge city where everyone is alone...[gesellschaft-focus on society]

country life, less stress, more family time and moments with the ones you love, miles from nowhere yet family unity keeps happiness alive.[gemeinschaft-focus on family]

all in all, the story is for city kids to explore and enjoy nature instead of man made mountains (skyscrapers)

...well to me its just a poem written to describe a side walk. but then again i usually dont look too too deep into peoms unless they inspired me, ment something, or like i was able to related to it etc. anyhow, behind it there could still be something every deep that inspried shel silverstein to write this

To me the theme is that life can end in a very short time.
