Where does your morality come from?

If from yourself, how am i wrong?

If from society, how is another society wrong?

What's the standard that judges whether one person is right and one person is wrong?

Was Hitler wrong in his actions? If he was, why? Was he wrong because his morality was different from everyone else?

1+1=2, but what's that third thing that tells us who is right and who is wrong?

wow, so far only one person answered my questions... the first was a bringer in. the details were to be read and thought about.

Update 2:

Conscience... there is a significant amount of research that shows it is about how we were raised, not genetics or god. We are taught it... and NO that doesn't mean religion... it means if your parents were kind... you are more likely to be kind.

PS. Just because "jesus" said *do unto others* doesn't mean that philosohpy didn't exist long before the bible crap was written.

"Where does your morality come from?" - from my parents and family. Then after age 18 I took what I learned and added and subtracted and adapted and altered, and combined with my wife's - the morality I now follow.

"What's the standard that judges whether one person is right and one person is wrong?" - when one person hurts or uses physical or mental actions to force unwanted actions on another that's WRONG.

I have checked 70+ societies and all have customs and laws to prevent abuse of their citizens by others. I would guess if I continued I would find more communities have a set of values that reflect the attitudes of that community and laws to protect their people from others.

Was Hitler wrong in hurting others - I can say YES, but I am only using my morality to answer you, I can not force you to agree and won't try. I know a few followed his ideal/goal so they must have like what he was selling.

I have no clue what the third thing is that tells humans what is right or wrong - prior life lessons learned from our family when we were young? Wisdom with age? Few old people wave red flags at bulls, or play in the street. Being able to see the larger picture of how ones actions affect others, and not wanting to hurt others. Not wanting to embarrass their family by their actions, so think before acting. Hmm, I still do not know.

Do Unto Others As The Would Have Them Do Unto You, and I would have people be compassionate and fair to me. My moral conduct comes from self analysis of how I would hope to be treated by others. I cannot be wrong because, even though there are other points of view of morally correct, if I believe my actions to be compassionate and fair to all people equally, there is no rational mind that could point out how you can treat people better, if you treat people unevenly....well, just watch the news. Since what I would have people do to me is the basis for my action/moral, it is an internal and foundational truth, so I can act with 100% conviction I am acting from the truth (something we pretty much never do, even when we think we are), and in this case truth is my own understandings of compassion and evenness. And since I want people to be compassionate and fair to me, its perfect.

....what's that third thing that tells us who is right and who is wrong?

At the lowest level of our humanity there is a sense of right and wrong. As if we are so wired that there is a knowledge of what is good or evil.

You and I despite our different backgrounds will find that there will be some things that we will agree are wrong. It seems to me that we are given this sense of right and wrong by someone, perhaps a creator, by design?

Evidence of a Creator God. I think so.

As long as you are in the Religious section, I am going to give you a Religious answer...I hope you don't mind.:-) My mortaity comes from GOD...and his LAW. (aka the bible) Hitler was wrong because God said "thou shalt not murder" and Hitler murdered. Hitler was wrong because God said "Thou shalt not convete" Hitler conveted. Hitler was wrong because God Said "My house shall be a HOUSE of PRAYER" Hitler burned churches. Hitler broke a lot of God's LAWs. Thats why hitler was wrong. 1+4x2=10 reason's why I have morals that are correct. The TEN commandments... 1 You SHALL have no other gods before me.

2 you shall not make yourself idols.

3You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

4Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy

5Honor your father and your mother

    6You shall not murder

    7You shall not commit adultery

    8You shall not steal

9You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor

10You shall not covet your neighbor's house.

My morals come from 10 LAWS that were laid down by GOD...

God is a God of love, and a God of amazing gifts...life is a gift my friend, use it well.

    God bless

    My heart and my conscience

    Romans 2

14For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another

Read an ethics primer, that and a book on evolutionary psychology, its a big subject.

One place my morals do not come from is a 2,000 + year old book, though some of them overlap.

Morality evolved through tribal cohesion. It improved the survivability of the species.
