well..actually there are several things that come into play as to a profession in the Air Force.

    1. You take the asvab test, and score good enough to request enlistment in the Air Force at a guaranteed Profession. This is taken into consideration at the MEPERs station when you go and have your physical to determine what kind of jobs you a suited to do. if you meet both the physical and test performance standards for that profession, you can request to enter it. If they have the position open, you are provisionally guaranteed immediate or delayed entry in the Air Force to do it.

    2. okay, you don't have the ASVAB scores or the physical ability to do your dream profession. You then request an open enlistment in the Air Force, which doesn't guarantee you anything but that you will have sort of job in the air force when you finish basic training. And this is where the needs of the Air Force come to play. If when you arrive at lackland during your second week of training, and they present you with a short list of the available jobs you might be qualified to do (like the 175 positions for Security Police I was looking at on my list when i was at lackland...thank god for an average asvab score of 98) well..you get to list the top positions you'd hopefully qualify for and they check you to see if you'd fit.

BTW...i got to be an environmental health technician. None of my training instructors even knew what it was..one ventured it was checking sewer lines. How wrong they were. It actually turned out to be a very good profession, although they renamed it Bio-environmental engineering technician about a year later. you really don't know.

In regards to being a pilot. well you don't enlist to be one. Only officers in the Air Force have the potential to be pilots. often, these people are selected while at the Air Force academy, as the result of completion of college ROTC and after commissioning as an officer, or as the candidate that completes officer training school (OTS) that had some form of college graduation with a degree. The only way i know of an enlisted person that wants to be a pilot is one that had previous college and is selected for OTS, or discharges into bootstrap to complete college and becomes an officer...well that's the keywords...college completion and passing the physical qualification to be an officer.

In some round about ways..you do kinda select your position i guess. Good luck at getting your dreams...

It is a combination. If you already have good technical skills on repairing computers, you can probably make a strong case to go into that field. You might also be able to get a civilian technician job in IT.

Unfortunately, everyone in the air force wants to be a pilot, so there is quite a bit of competition

Only if you voluntarily enlist do you get some kind of choice of your destiny in the Air Force. Only those who can pass an 'A1 Flight Physical', perfect vision, perfect color vision, very fit, a college diploma is a must can someone become a pilot in the Air Force. If the Air Force has a need for the skill you want to be trained in and there's a need for that skill at the Air Base you want, do you get it. Ultimately you do and go where the Air Force needs you.

For the most part yeah. Thats how it is with all branches of the service. But of course you have to choose something that you would best be qualified for. They arent gonna bring you in as a pilot, medic, or some other skilled job if you have lower test scores. Your recruiter will help you pick something that you are interested in and best suited for.

Pararescue has one of the vital maximum drop out charges within the army. Good good fortune. Air Force is ALL approximately going for walks. You bigger have a satisfactory athletic frame sort to get via Para. But do not fear, every body who is going via coaching is anxious till you get into it.
