The reason for it is that the Texas state flag has a single star on it.

By the way, for those people that believe Texas is the only state with the right to have its flag at the same height as the American flag because of some rule adopted when Texas was brought into the Union is DEAD WRONG so stop spreading your lies. Any state can have their flag at the same height...they just choose not to because they actually have respect for the country as opposed to some obsession with a single state. See my link for proof and knock off the myth!

    Two schools of thought here:

Perhaps one of the most recognized nicknames of any state, “The Lone Star State” comes from the symbolism of the star on the 1836 flag of the republic, the “National Standard of Texas.” The single golden star on a blue background signified Texas as an independent republic and was a reminder of the state’s struggle for independence from Mexico. The “Lone Star” can be found on the Texas State Flag and on the Texas State Seal today.

The Lone Star came to be when in 1821 Governor of the Mexican Providence of Texas, Henry Smith was reading some important papers. He signed them and then declared that Texas needed a seal. His overcoat had large brass buttons with the impression of a five pointed star on them. The Governor cut one of the buttons from his overcoat, and stamped it in sealing wax on the documents.

Your question has been answered, but I'd like to give a bit of trivia. The flag of the South American country of Chile is very much like the Texas flag. The only difference is that the blue field on the Chilean flag only goes half way down instead of all the way. It has one white star.

The story goes that when Chile needed a flag that it was a Texan who came up with the design. Many people who are not that familiar with the two often get them mixed up.
