does the president have to get permission to redecorate/remodel the white house?

Is the white house considered a national monument?

Update:

I mean is it protected under the national historic society?

I don't think he needs permission, but he does need money. Jackie Kennedy redecorated the White House in the early 60s. She was an antique collector and amazing decorator. She tried to gather as much of the original/previous pres furniture to use in the update. She was a restorer as much as anything. There was a tv special she narrated that might stilll be around somewhere. I haven't heard of any projects that extensive since then. I couldn't find anything about it's being a National Monument.

It is not a monument in the true sense. And the President has the right to decorate.

Each Pres. gets to decorate one room during their stay there.
